IP Phone Service Can Save You Money - If You Know What To Look For
If you've heard someone talk about an IP phone, what they're referrring to is a phone that makes calls using the Voice over IP (VOIP or sometimes VoIP) protocol. What this means is that the phone uses the internet, rather than the traditional phone lines to transmit and receive the call.
IP phone calling has come a long way in the past few years. There are now a multitde of plans that are offered by many different providers. Some are traditional phone companies, some are Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and some are businesses that only offer VOIP service.
At this point in time, the VOIP plans that are offered vary markedly between carriers. Unlike DSL or cable broadband Internet access, where the various plans available from different providers will have some semblance of similarity to each other, a VOIP phone plan from one company will frequently bear no likeness to the offering of a competitor, making it difficult to compare.
The key is to figure out what you want before starting your search, and then narrow the list of IP phone network providers down to only those that offer the things you need. Do you intend to make the calls from your computer? Is it ok if you can only call people who are also subscribed to the same service and have a computer too? Or would you rather use a special phone with an adapter that hooks up to your broadband connection? Maybe you don't want to mess with adapters and want a phone that just plugs into your internet connection and lets you call anyone with a phone. Or maybe you want the newest option - wireless VOIP. You can get any of these things - but usually not all from the same supplier. There are many other differences between VOIP phone providers. Some services are free. These are usually the ones that require you to use special software, your computer and a microphone, and only allow you to call others who have the same software. Others are free for local calls, but not for long distance. Others charge you a monthly fee, but allow you to call anyone anywhere. Many IP phone network plans include special features such as anonymous call rejection, call transfer, do not disturb, voice mail, call forwarding, telemarketer block, caller ID blocking, and more. There are two caveats you will definitely want to take into consideration, however. The first is the fact that some services are not yet as well integrated with the 911 emergency calling system as are traditional phone lines. At one time, most VOIP phone plans did not support 911 at all. That's changed, and nowadays, the majority are 911 enabled. However, there are still a number of plans that don't allow the 911 operator to automatically pinpoint your location. Secondly, remember that in the event of a power outage, your VOIP phone service will probably also go out. Most Internet connections will, and at it's most basic, that's what IP phone service is. By comparison, traditional phone systems will stay up as long as the phone lines are intact, even if the power is out, because phone companies use backup generators and other methods to keep the lines alive. IP phone service is an amazing offering that would have never been imagined by most of us ten years ago. If you decide to take advantage, it's possible to pay less for phone service yet get more. Just be sure to do your research first, so you can find the company that's perfect for your needs.
