DSL Providers - Which One Is For You?
There are tons of DSL providers out there today. Here are a few that have been around a while:
Earthlink
Their DSL service charge begins at $12.95 for six months with toll-free 24/7 support and includes all necessary equipment for no charge. There is a twelve month contract with an early termination fee of $149.95. After the intial six month period, the prices goes up. The exact amount of the increase depends on which company Earthlink is partnering with in your area. For a 1.5 Mbps downstream connection, the cost will be $29.95 to 39.95 per month. For 3.0 Mbps, it'll be $39.95 to 44.95. And their fastest teir, at 6.0 Mbps, will also run you between $39.95 and 44.95, if it's available in your area.
Verizon DSL This starts as low as $14.99 for twelve months for a 768 Kbps downstream/128 Kbps upstream connection with a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. The price requires a 12 month contract with a $79 cancellation fee. It includes a free self installation kit, but a shipping fee may be added. 24/7 support, 9 e-mail accounts and 10 MB of personal Web space are included. There also is a 3.0 Mbps/768 Kbps plan that costs $19.99 for the first six months and 29.99 for the next six months. AT&T/BellSouth FastAccess This plan was formerly known as BellSouth FastAccess, but is now called AT&T FastAccess. It offers four different plans. The least expensive is $24.95 per month for a speed of 256 Kbps/128 Kbps. That doesn't seem to compare favorably with the competition, but there is an advantage is that it does not require a contract. The plan comes with a DSL modem and/or router at no charge (mail-in rebate required), five e-mail addresses, and a free dial up account. AT&T Yahoo DSL This used to be known as SBC Yahoo DSL. Plans start at $14.99. No contract is required, and the plan comes with unlimited dial up access and a free self-install kit. You can get two months free service and $50 cash back depending on the plan and features you sign up for. The speeds available range from 768 Kbps downstream to 6.0 Mbps downstream, with the latter going for $34.99 per month and up. Qwest DSL Here plans start at $26.99 and go up to $36.99 per month. These prices require that you also get a qualifying home phone package from Quest. Without the phone plans, prices start at $31.99. To lock these prices in for life, sign a two year contract. The modem is not free, but they will give you a $30 rebate. The cheapest plan's transfer rate is 1.5 Mbps downstream and the $36.99 plan gives you as much as 7.O Mbps. You can also get some free gifts like an MP3 player, a digital camera, or a 2GB flash drive if you sign up online. There are a lot of DSL providers out there today, and the offers can be very confusing. You'll probably find that only certain companies will offer DSL service to your location, so don't rush into anything - just take your time to carefully compare the various offers, and do some research online to see how happy current customers are with the level of service. This is the most important aspect, as it doesn't matter how fast a DSL connection is if it's always down when you want to use it.
